Witch Dungeon Museum

  • Neighborhood: Salem
  • Hours: Sun-Sat 10 am-5 pm
In this former church, two women in colonial garb movingly act out a scene of a girl accusing Elizabeth Proctor of witchcraft (“Now it is I who is wrongly accused, but I will not be the last of my neighbors”). Then a costumed guide leads a tour through a papier-mache “dungeon” filled with jailed mannequins, girls freaking out to Tituba’s tales, and convicted “witches” hanged from a tree. It’s one of the few Halloween attractions to actually display an artifact: a beam from the original, demolished Salem jail where accused “witches” were held. Any woman who touches it is said to receive good luck. And is the old church haunted? Walking through the “dungeon,” the guide says, “There are said to be spirits of old clergymen hanging out in that area there.”
