Lev Grossman’s New York Times’ best seller The Magicians has been dubbed “Harry Potter for adults.” And although that’s an accurate summation — think of Harry and pals as dysfunctional adults with a passel of sexual hang-ups and booze habits, and a taste for naughty language — his dark fantasy deserves more credit than that. Grossman opens a door into an alternate universe of talking animals with attitude problems, heroes with serious Peter Pan issues, and heroines who are as likely to use a blowjob as a wand to cast their spells. Grossman, who also happens to be the book critic for Time, discusses the second installment in the Magician series, The Magician King, at the Brookline Booksmith.
