163 Vietnamese Sandwich

66 Harrison Ave, Boston, MA
  • Neighborhood: Boston
  • Price: $
  • Hours: Daily, 7:30 am-7:30 pm
This slightly-shabby Chinatown storefront is an excellent Vietnamese deli. The traditional bánh mì (the Vietanemse answer to a sub) are served on very fine nine-inch baguettes with a crackle in the crust that suggests rice flour in the dough. Sliced onions, daikon, and pickled carrots, lots of fresh cilantro, a big cucumber spear, and a dressing of Kewpie mayonnaise and nuoc chom (a garlicky/sweet/hot vinaigrette based on fish sauce) form the filling base. Add your choice of meat, like xiu mai (mildly seasoned, crushed pork meatballs), "BBQ" beef (with good char-grilled flavor and a terrific lemongrass marinade), or chicken. Beats Subway any day.
